Blacksmiths Forge

The traditional Blacksmiths Forge has become more sophisticated over the years, although the basic principles remain mostly unchanged. The most common Blacksmiths Forge is the one fired by coal, charcoal or hot burning coke. The Blacksmiths Forge is a specially designed fire place really where the temperature can be controlled so that any metal is heated to the exact temperature the blacksmith needs. This depends on what he plans to do – shaping, annealing or drawing. The Blacksmiths Forge has three parts of the forge are The hearth of the Blacksmiths Forge is where the burning coke (or other fuel) is burned and over which the metal is placed and heated. The Blacksmiths Forge has three parts of the forge are:The hearth of the Blacksmiths Forge is where the burning coke (or other fuel) is burned and over which the metal is placed and heated.

Then there is the Tuyere which is a large pipe leading into the hearth through which air is forced. The strength of the fire and the heat it produces will all depend on the amount of air being forced to it through the Tuyere tube. The bellows of the Blacksmiths Forge are the mechanism in which air is forced through the Tuyere tube into the burning hearth. While earlier model bellows were pumps operated by muscles power, modern forges now have high power fans to force air into the Tuyere. The Blacksmith uses his experience to adjust the mixture of air and fuel in the hearth to produce the exact temperature needed to heat the metal. A traditional Blacksmiths Forge will have quite a flat bottomed fire hearth with the Tuyere entering it from down below. The fire will be a mass of burning coke in the center of the hearth. In the Blacksmiths Forge, around this furiously burning coke will be a wall of hot, but not burning coal. This provides insulation and focuses the heat of the fire to a small contained area, allowing the Blacksmith to heat the metal very precisely. The hot coal also becomes transformed into coke which can then be used as fuel for the hearth. The outer wall of the fire in the Blacksmiths Forge is made up of a layer of raw coal, which is often kept damp so as to control the heat of the inner layer of hot coal so that is slowly “cooked” into coke. The size of the fire and the heat it produces can be changed by either adding or removing fuel from it as well and adjusting the air flow. By changing the shape of the outer layers of coal in the Blacksmiths Forge , the shape of the fire can also be modified to suit the shape of the metal piece being heated.

Blacksmiths of old had to fix many every day Wagons, chain, plough shears, horse bits and bridles even parts of saddles and now many modern Blacksmiths today use gas forges. These are fueled by either propane or natural gas. The gas is fed into the hearth, which is lined by tough ceramic materials, and mixed with air and lit. The pressure at which the gas is being fed into the hearth can be adjusted to vary the temperature required. A gas Blacksmiths Forge is easier to use and require less maintenance and cleaning, but the drawback is, unlike a coal fired Blacksmiths Forge, the shape of the fire is fixed and cannot be changed to suit the shape and size of the metal being heated. For craftsman Blacksmiths it pays to invest in a quality Blacksmiths Forge.
